CH 223: Fundamentals of General, Organic & Biochemistry

Program
Level
Undergraduate
Credits 4

This course is recommended for pre-nursing students and is designed to prepare students for a career in nursing or related health professions. The 2.5-hour lecture per week will cover general, organic and biochemistry topics. The general chemistry topics included are: metric system and measurement, atomic structure, periodic table, physical properties and states of matter, nuclear chemistry, mole concept, solutions, acids/bases, buffers, and phase changes. Organic chemistry topics will include nomenclature and structure of hydrocarbons, alcohols, phenols, thiols, amines, and relevant carbonyl containing compounds. Organic reactions covered will emphasize those reactions common in biochemistry. Topics in biochemistry will emphasize the structure and basic functions of carbohydrates, lipids and proteins. The three-hour laboratory sessions will support student learning in areas of metric system and measurement, atomic structure, classification of matter and its properties, acid/bases and buffers, chemical reactions, and reactions/structures of carbohydrates, lipid and amino acids.
