This course focuses on a fundamental transformation of political life in the modern era, namely, the shift to locating political authority in “the people.” Through careful reflection on the emergence of the concept of “the people,” students will gain an appreciation for the recognition of human autonomy involved in this transformation, as well as an understanding of the hierarchies it perpetuated or created and the fragility of democratic norms. Students will be asked to situate these ideas with respect to historical revolutions and contemporary political landscapes. This course is writing focused.
